It's Thursday, which means I'm highlighting an essential oil. Today I'm going to talk about doTERRA's Lemon essential oil.
Did you know that lemon trees were first cultivated in China, then in Southern Europe, and probably didn't come to the Americas until the 1400s at the earliest? Lemon oil (and other citrus oils) is collected not by distallation, like other oils but by cold pressing the peel under great pressure. By collecting the oil this way, it eliminates the use of any heat, which preserves the constituents of the oil.
DoTERRA obtains its lemon oil from Italy, because it is one of the best sources in the world.
Lemon is another very common essential oil that people have in their home, and for good reason. Some of the properties of Lemon include antibacterial, antibiotic, antiseptic, antiviral, astringent, diuretic, and a disinfectant.
What does that mean?
That means that it is fantastic to use to clean and disinfect your home. It will also clear up your cold or flu, your cough and sore throat (and throat infections), and even help with asthma symptoms. It can be used to help cleanse your liver, gallbladder and kidneys of toxins, and as a diuretic can relieve your constipation, and help with stomach aches. It can lower fevers and blood pressure (hypertension). And it can help relieve tension and stress. And on top of that it smells clean and fresh and is uplifting.
Some of the ways I use lemon in my house is to add a few drops to my water (remember this is doTERRA oil that I use, other brands may have carrier oils that make it so it's not okay to ingest or may contain pesticides, depending on their source for the oil) when I have a sore throat, or when I'm having gallbladder issues.
I put it in a glass spray bottle with water (and sometimes some vinegar, too) and clean with it...it's a great de-greaser and it disinfects at the same time.
Add a few drops of lemon to some olive oil and you have instant furniture polish.
Have an aphid infestation? Spray with lemon oil that's mixed with water. It'll naturally take care of it.
Diffuse it for a clean smell that is also disinfecting the home....especially during those times your house may have those 'odors'...like diaper blowouts, someone forgot to take out the garbage, etc.
